Diabetes Foot

Today I’m going to be talking to you about a special area of risk for diabetics what is commonly referred to as a diabetic foot so why are we so worried about this so every 15 seconds somewhere in the world there is a limb that is amputated or cut off and the primary reason for that is diabetes and its problems unfortunately

• Today the world is facing an epidemic of diabetes and India’s at the epicenter of this epidemic and as the global capital of diabetes diabetes affects the entire Middle East Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent and why is it the diabetes is such a problem for people on their feet so there’s a multitude of things that causes this when you’re a diabetic you have reduced blood flow to your legs and other parts of the body.

• There are changes in the way of foetus design because of it you’re especially prone to get wounds high blood sugars are associated with poor ability to fight infection and also the bacteria find it much easier to grow and cause a problem all of this makes patients very prone to developing a wound and they’re also very unable to deal with the consequences of having a wound and this ultimately progresses to infection gangrene and landing up with an amputation and losing a leg and why is losing the leg such a big deal I often ask my patients and my junior doctors if I were to give you a choice between losing one eye or losing one leg.

• What would you choose when you’re an older person if you lose an eye you can still manage if you lose one leg you lose your independence you’re not able to go to the bathroom on your own you can’t step out of the house on your own you can’t go to meet your friends there’s a lot of loss of Independence so it is really important that as diabetics we take care of our feet and protect it and what are the things you can do.

Number one: ensure that your blood sugars are under control.

Number two: ensure that you do not get accidental cut scrapes and injuries in your foot which can progress any minor injury needs to be treated early aggressively get your feet checked regularly make sure that somebody has checked and seen that you have adequate blood flow in your feet without adequate blood flow no foot wound will heal and you are at a very high risk of learning into difficulties and that is where V as vascular surgeons come in we go to extreme lengths to try and protect your feet and try to preserve your independence but the person who can help this process the most is yourself by taking ownership of how you take care of your feet I wish you the best and take care and hopefully we will keep you out of any difficulties thank you.
